Federal Fraud Activities and Florida Impacts
On March 3rd, 2026, the US House Committee on Energy and Commerce launched investigations into Medicaid fraud across 10 states.
On March 17th, 2026, Governor Desantis received a letter from Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requesting details on how Florida detects and prevents Medicaid fraud. The letter cited previous fraud cases as part of broader improper billing concerns and added Florida as the 11th state to be investigated.
On April 15th, 2026, Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the establishment of a public assistance fraud task force. The purpose of the task force was to “protect the public, preserve the integrity of the Medicaid program, and safeguard the populations it serves.” Additionally, they noted, “Fraud and abuse of taxpayer-funded benefit programs may constitute criminal offenses ranging from misdemeanors to felonies and can result in fines, restitution, and incarceration.”
On April 23rd, 2026, Dr. Oz announced that all 50 needed to revalidate Medicaid providers that are considered at high risk for waste, fraud, and abuse. He gave states 10 business days to notify CMS of their plans to revalidate and 30 days to submit a 2-year plan for reviewing provider legitimacy.
